J. Collingwood Bruce's

HANDBOOK TO
THE ROMAN WALL

Handbook and Roman Wall

The first edition of Bruce's classic Handbook to the Wall was issued in 1863. Revised at intervals by a series of distinguished editors, its role gradually changed from mere guidebook to a statement of current knowledge and research on Hadrian’s Wall. It acquired an international reputation, becoming an indispensable work of reference to archaeologists as well as the essential guide for visitors to the Wall. The last edition appeared as long ago as 1978. This has long been out of print and an updated fourteenth edition eagerly awaited. Professor David Breeze has completely re-written the book in the light of a quarter of a century of excavation and research. The Handbook has both a durable weatherproof cover and the compact pocket size shared by all previous editions.

David Breeze has excavated on both Hadrian's Wall and on the Antonine Wall and written many books and articles about the Roman frontiers of Britain. He was chairman of the Pilgrimages of Hadrian's Wall in 1989 and 1999 and was Chief Inspector of Ancient Monuments for Scotland from 1989 to 2005

14th edition of Bruce's Handbook to the Roman Wall, completely revised and rewritten by Professor David Breeze.
