Applications sought for Castle Studies Trust grants

The Castle Studies Trust has announced that it will be increasing its maximum grant award to £15,000 in its next round of grants. Applications will open on 1 September and close on 1 December 2026. Follow this link for more information and an application form. 

  • The Trust awards grants to advance the understanding of castles and the type of projects we fund are:
  • Site-based survey work (e.g. geophysical, architectural, topographical, -LiDAR)
  • Excavations
  • Scientific tests on objects/materials from a castle site (e.g. radiocarbon dating)
  • Review of historical sources (only as part of a Castle Studies Trust funded project)
  • Pieces of work, such as reconstruction drawings, which would help the public understanding of a castle site.

The region has benefited from their generosity this year, when they awarded £2,000 to co-fund post excavation analysis and a report on Newcastle Castle, and £1,900 to create digital images of Durham Castle's 12th century entranceway. The Newcastle Castle report will be published in due course in a special issue of Archaeologia Aeliana.
