3 Jan 2014, Commemorating the Great War in Gosforth, leader Lord (John) Shipley. Post-Christmas walk in Gosforth, including an introduction to St Nicholas Church Gosforth, an eighteenth-century church with Anglo-Saxon roots, and its graveyard with a surprising number of Great War memorials in both.

6 Apr, Country Walk, East of Wylam, with Lindsay Allason-Jones; 7 mile circular walk taking in both sides of the river, looking at the monument to the 1640 Battle of Newburn.

30 Apr, Monthly Meeting, Making stones sing in tune: canonics and the reconstruction of ancient Greek melody. Dr David Creese, Lecturer in Classics at Newcastle University. 10 May, 10.30, Country Walk, Rimside Moor Road: Roman Road to Toll Road, led by Derek Cutts.

16 June, Summer Walk, Classical Newcastle. Alan Beale led a walk around the city looking at its many examples of the classical orders of architecture

20 June, 7.30, President's Evening,  Black Gate, Castle Garth, Newcastle upon Tyne. An opportunity to see the exciting changes in the Keep and the Black Gate. Kim Bibby-Wilson played the Northumbrian pipes, and Ian Ayris was the speaker.

5 July, Country Walk, Spadeadam RAF Base,

where Blue Streak was tested. Led by Phil Abramson.

 

 

 

 

21 July, A Scenic and Historical Stroll along the Central Motorway (East). John Griffiths led a walk looking at the only completed parts of Newcastle's 1960s Motorway Plan.

26 July, Annual summer celebration picnic on the lawn at the Great North Museum. This year’s event had a Roman theme with lots of activities inside the museum for the whole family. People could make their own Roman shield, take part in a mystery trail, join a Centurion’s drill and got their hands dirty making Roman pottery. Staff from the Portable Antiquities Scheme were on hand to identify finds. And even the prospect of a shark attack did not deter Society volunteers from helping people uncover the surprising secrets of Roman Britain. After a slightly slow start, nearly 800 people attended through the day!

30 Aug, Country Meeting, Brantwood with lake cruise.

10 Sept, New Members' sessions, in our library at the Great North Museum. The librarian and administrator were on hand to show people round and there was a chance to look at some of our rare books, to talk to people on Council and the various committees about how SANT works and the activities we undertake, and to have a glass of wine.

27 Dec, Walk; Gateshead from railway town to sculpture park. Anthea Lang led an urban walk from the Sage, past the old railway works and along the riverside to the Gateshead end of Swing Bridge. The picture (courtesy Gerry Tomlinson) is of one of the artworks along the riverside walk.
