Please note: New subscribers receive the volume dated for their first year of subscription (so subscribers in 2026 will receive the 2026 volume when it is published, even if that is after the end of the calendar year).

Print copies of the volumes published in the last five years (that is, 2021 onwards), are available at £40 for hardbacks, £35 for paperbacks, with a 25% discount for members, + £5 UK p&p per volume.  For older volumes where available, prices are £8 for hardbacks, £5 for paperbacks, + UK p&p as above. Overseas p&p will vary according to the weight of the parcel. A number of volumes are now out of print, and you can avoid p&p by calling in to collect copies, so please enquire about costs and availability before ordering, by e-mailing admin@newcastle-antiquaries.org.uk or by filling in and sending us the form below.

History

As was frequently the case with periodicals at that time, the first volumes were published in parts over a period of time, and subscribers were expected to have the parts bound together when a volume was completed. Volume 1 was published in 1822. It appeared intermittently at first, but for the last hundred years one volume has been published each year. The journal covers all aspects of the history of North-East England, ranging from archaeology (including excavation reports) and buildings to historical and documentary research, and from prehistory to the present. It has always been an important vehicle for the publication of research on Hadrian's Wall and the Romans in North-East England.

The word Aeliana in the title refers to the Latin name for the Roman bridge over the Tyne, Pons Aelius, 'the Aelian Bridge', referring to Emperor Hadrian's family name. Subsequently, it was used as the name for the Roman fort here (on the site where Newcastle Castle now stands). The usual pronunciation is eeliahner, but it is most often abbreviated to AA.
