Why are the elephants dragging a skeleton?

Do you know when and where this picture was taken, and for what occasion? Or would you like to do some research on it. A number of people have responded to our request for information, including the Keeper of Pachyderms at the Natural History Museum, who expressed surprise that elephants could have been induced to pull along a skeleton - they are normally very sensitive about this. One of our members has been able to identify the building in the background and therefore the earliest date at which the picture could have been taken, but there were, another member has discovered, a surprising number of elephants around in Newcastle at the end of the nineteenth and early twentieth century.  E-mail Lindsay Allason-Jones if you can offer more help.
