- Death of past president Brian Dobson
We are sorry to announce the death of the Society’s Past President (1993-1995) Brian Dobson, on 19 July 2012, aged 80.
Members may follow this link for a brief tribute to Brian, prepared by David Breeze. There will be a longer one in the next News Bulletin, and in due course, in Archaeologia Aeliana.
Planning applications for Old Newcastle project
The Society is a partner in the Old Newcastle project, under which Heritage Lottery Funding has been secured to create an accessible, heritage-led education and interpretation centre in our former headquarters the Black Gate. Planning and Listed Building applications have now been made for both the alterations to the Black Gate. Follow this link to find them on Newcastle City Council's public access site. The reference numbers you need are 2012/0840/01/LBC and 2012/0841/01/DET. Members may also follow this link to see the presentation about the project made to the Society on 25th April 2012.
The Society is saddened to learn of the loss of Barbara Harbottle, who died in hospital on 17 February at the age of 80. At a crowded memorial service in St Nicholas Cathedral on 7 March, Dame Rosemary Cramp gave a moving tribute to her long-standing friend and colleague; members may follow this link to read her words. Although Barbara was much averse to being photographed, friends have provided two images of her; follow this link to see her on an excavation in 1963; and this one for her on an outing in 2009. (Thanks for these to David Breeze and Tom Yellowley respectively).
Old Archaeologia Aeliana volumes on the web
A number of early volumes of Archaeologia Aeliana (out of copyright) have been digitised by the University of Toronto and are now available on the internet. Much of the Second Series, from 1855 to 1902, is there, and some of the earlier volumes of the 3rd series as well. Look on www.archive.org (it’s a not-for-profit site), and put Archaeologia Aeliana into the search box. See the Contents Page on this website for a list of the volumes available in this way. If anyone finds others available elsewhere, please let us know so we can add them to the list.
Society gears up for 2013 Bicentenary celebrations
An exciting calendar of events is being prepared for our Bicentenary. This will include a major exhibition at the Great North Museum and your help is sought as to a snappy title which sums up 200 years of SANT achievements! Any ideas for titles should be sent to Lindsay Allason-Jones. A brochure, listing all the actvities for 2013, is being prepared and will be sent to all members at the start of the year.
Nineteenth century photos from the Black Gate
A collection of glass plate negatives, which were found in the Black Gate during the Society's move to the GNM, has been loaned to the Mining Institute for cleaning and digitising. Emerging from the dirt of ages, they have proved to be a remarkable collection of images showing people in the streets of Newcastle in the 19th century. Work is continuing to ascertain who took the photographs and the exact date. They became the subject of a centre-page spread in the Guardian (follow this link to see this), and there are suggestions that the New York Times is taking an interest. For further information contact Simon Brooks at the Mining Institute.
